A Tip of the Hat to Moms Everywhere

Dear mothers of the world,

You are complete badasses. It takes complete badassery to bring more human beings into the world.

First, you have to put up with everyone patronizing you for your entire pregnancy, while you struggle to keep down the low-level feeling of nausea or exhaustion.

As thanks for that, after nine months you get to experience the most traumatic bodily event of your life as you push a very large yet very fragile little human out of your body in an event which has killed millions of women before you.

Somehow you manage to get through that and love the little human.

As thanks for that, you’re now saddled with caring for a totally helpless person for years and years to come. You might sacrifice your work life, your social life, or your hobbies, but you will give up something. You will take up your child’s interests and become things you might never have planned to become – a “soccer mom,” a PTA member, etc.

You put up with their messiness, laziness, pride, anger, ignorance,  and ingratitude with no guarantee that your child will understand the work you’re putting in. You stay up late wondering if they are OK. You live in fear that all of your sacrifice will come to nothing.

It’s not obvious where your responsibility ends, but you still somehow have to provide enough care and provide enough space for your child to grow into adulthood.

One day, you realize you’ve done it. Now you have to face a world that doesn’t look to you for the future anymore. It might try to push you aside.

Don’t let it. You nurtured new life. You are a complete badass. And the world will always need you.
