It’s My 24th Birthday! Help Me Bring Clean Drinking Water to 24 Humans with Charity: Water

Few things feel better than working with other people to solve a problem. That love has kept me going at BitPay for 5 years. That love will stay with me as a I head on to new undertakings here in my 25th year of life.

Yep, it’s my birthday tomorrow. And for two birthdays now I’ve invited people to help me raise money for Charity: Water, which is about as fine a charity as you can find these days. This year I’m asking again.

Why Charity: Water?

Charity:Water dedicates 100% of donations toward building and sustaining clean drinking water access points for people around the world. And if you don’t think clean water matters, consider how quickly your world would fall apart if you couldn’t shower for two days. Now imagine dealing with that, plus walking miles every day just to get a daily ration of water that won’t poison you or your family.

Drinking water access isn’t just about basic hydration. It helps to ensure health, safety, freedom, and economic opportunity for communities.

Why give?

No one owes me anything. Also: birthdays are overrated. But I’m going to ask for your help anyway – it seems like a good time. And if you’re looking for a charity to support this year, this ain’t a bad place to start.

You people have already surprised me with your generosity. In 2018 we raised $552 to fund clean drinking water for 18 people. In 2019 we raised $576 for 19 people. Now I’m going to be audacious enough to up the game. Since I’m turning 24, it seems appropriate to have a go at giving clean drinking water to 24 other humans.

We are going to raise $740. We can do this!

What do you get? (Hint: I become your personal writing slave)

If you get value from me or my writing at jameswalpole.com, I’d be really honored if you decided to contribute. If you donate $20 or more (email me if you do at james@jameswalpole.com), I’ll write a short extemporaneous blog post riffing on a word/topic/question of your choosing*. I will exercise judgment about what’s too personal or reprehensible – so keep it PG, y’all.

How to give

Just visit the campaign and donate.

If you’ve given before, accept my thanks. You’ve helped to make my birthday more meaningful, and you have helped your fellow humans in a big way.

*Offer only valid until we hit our $740 goal, so move fast, y’all.
