This morning I walked to work instead of driving.
Despite working a new job with a new commute, I’ve already tired of driving in each morning. As luck would have it, this morning I remembered I’d left my work truck at the shop where work starts every morning.
So I walked.
It’s not far at all. Just a little stretch of dirt road. Yet by being on foot I got to see the thing I’d been missing on my other mornings: a brand new earth.
If you wake up later than 8 AM, or if you don’t go outside in the mornings, you won’t really appreciate what I’m talking about. But if you’ve seen the sun playing on dew drops and making everything shine, you know how especially beautiful the early morning hours are. Things are still cool, light is brilliant but not oppressive, and wild animals are moving about and making their songs.
Each day the earth gets a fresh start – as truly as we do – and it’s hard not to look around and feel a relief from the grinding repetition of life. For an hour or two, the earth is refreshed, and it doesn’t give a fig what happened yesterday.
You might get an extra couple of hours of sleep if you stay in bed, but you’ll wake up to an earth that has lost its freshness. Why deny yourself like that?
