There are few greater pleasures in life than rolling down your windows, picking up speed, turning on good music, and driving down a road with a beautiful view.
Here are some of my current favorite drives, from small backroads to interstate routes:
- GA-400 North, Atlanta, GA: Between Buckhead and Alpharetta, I get a big open sky, some beautiful buildings (like the King and Queen buildings in Sandy Springs), and lots of pine forest surrounding me on my daily commute to work.
- River Road, John’s Island, SC: This is the home stretch for a journey home. It’s lined with great live oak trees hanging with Spanish moss, with farms and homes that have been in place before my time, and it comes to an end (for me at least) at the dirt road of the home farm.
- SC-37 and other backroads, New Holland through Orangeburg, SC: This is the road that takes me home. Instead of passing through dingy old Columbia, I get to take a shortcut home to Charleston through beautiful farm fields. The small towns, rusting equipment, and the prevalence of farms takes me back in time and gives me some of my best imagination time.
- I-24 West, Chattanooga – Nashville, TN: This stretch of Interstate I take on trips to Nashville takes me through country beautiful enough to break your heart. There are gorgeous mountains, with horse and cattle grazing pasture and grain fields lying nestled and protected in their valleys.
